Who regulates private eyelid surgery in Scotland?
Healthcare Improvement Scotland, not the CQC. It is a legal requirement for private clinics in Scotland to register with HIS, and its online register shows which treatments each service is regulated to provide, along with inspection reports. If something goes wrong you can complain to HIS, ideally after raising it with the clinic first. Check the surgeon separately on the GMC register.
Can I get blepharoplasty on the NHS in Scotland?
Rarely. NHS Scotland’s national referral protocol lists blepharoplasty as not routinely provided. It may be considered if excess skin restricts your visual field, with visual field tests done before referral, but not where tiredness or ageing is the primary concern. Lower-lid surgery is considered only as part of treating an ectropion, and every approved referral is seen by a specialist clinical psychologist. More in blepharoplasty on the NHS.
Is surgery in Glasgow usually under local anaesthetic?
Often, for upper lids. The Bath Street clinic and the West End clinic both list local anaesthetic, and the latter does lower lids as day cases too. Ask your clinic what it uses and why. The full guide to blepharoplasty explains the options, and the recovery guide covers what follows.
